Thrombocytopenia in Plasmodium vivax infected children.

چکیده
Malaria is endemic in 91 countries. Maximum mortality is associated with Plasmodium falciparum malaria and more than 8,00,000 deaths occur in children less than five years of age1. P. falciparum usually presents with severe or complicated malaria, which presents as fever, chills, shock, hepatic failure, renal failure, cerebral malaria and malarial sepsis. It leads to 100% mortality if left untreated. Simple malaria presents with fever, chills and splenomegaly and is usually caused by P. vivax, P. malariae and P. ovale. Thrombocytopenia is a usual phenomenon in complicated malaria and is uncommonly seen in P. vivax. Thrombocytopenia has been found in 3.6% of adult patients with P. vivax from India2 and only one case of severe malaria has been reported in a child3. However, in 2004 during the rainy season, we had six children who presented with fever and thrombocytopenia due to vivax malaria, which was never seen in previous years suggesting a change in the clinical presentation of the disease. We present these six cases with discussion on thromobocytopenia in vivax malaria.

Parasitemia and Hematological Alterations in Malaria: A Study from the Highly Affected Zones
Background& Objectives: Inspite of intensive worldwide efforts to reduce its transmission, malaria remains the most serious and widespread protozoal infection of humans. It is a protozoan disease transmitted by the bite of infected female anopheles mosquito. Malaria has long featured prominently in the grey area between parasitology and hematology. This study has been...
متن کاملClinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Chloroquine in Children and Their Mothers
Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are the parasites that infect humans. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax cause most of the malarial infections worldwide. Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are susceptible to chloroquine. Chloroquine was the world's most widely used antim...
متن کاملResponse of plasmodium vivax malaria induced thrombocytopenia to antimalarial treatment.
BACKGROUND Thrombocytopenia is often seen in the patients of malaria infected with Plasmodium vivax. We studied patients admitted in hospital having coexisting thrombocytopenia and malaria, and recorded the response to anti-malarial therapy. METHODS In this cross-sectional descriptive study, a total of 120 patients admitted in medical ward with Plasmodium vivax malaria and co-existing thrombo...
متن کاملPlatelet profile is associated with clinical complications in patients with vivax and falciparum malaria in Colombia.
INTRODUCTION Thrombocytopenia is a common complication in malaria patients. The relationship between abnormal platelet profile and clinical status in malaria patients is unclear. In low and unstable endemic regions where vivax malaria predominates, the hematologic profiles of malaria patients and their clinical utility are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to characterize the thrombo...
متن کاملAlterations in cytokines and haematological parameters during the acute and convalescent phases of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections
Haematological and cytokine alterations in malaria are a broad and controversial subject in the literature. However, few studies have simultaneously evaluated various cytokines in a single patient group during the acute and convalescent phases of infection. The aim of this study was to sequentially characterise alterations in haematological patters and circulating plasma cytokine and chemokine ...
